One step toward a successful semester includes taking advantage of all of the services and resources that the Library has to offer.  You are always welcome to visit us at our service desks to learn about what we can do for you.

In addition to our service desks, next week we will have a table with volunteers who are eager to answer your questions about how we can help you! Here are the details:

Tuesday, Sept. 5 and Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017
10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Main (3rd) Floor of the Library

Not sure what to ask? Consider inquiring about:
• Our research tools (OneSearch, CatalogUSMAI, various databases),
• Research assistance from a librarian,
• Equipment (copiers, printers, scanners),
• Facilities (group and individual study rooms, quiet areas),
• And much more!

If you're unable to visit it at those times, just visit the library’s circulation, media or reference desks. We’re always happy to answer your questions!

New Displays for September in the Ort Library

The Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays in the Ort Library for September. The first display, located on the 3rd floor highlights the resources that the library offers to students, faculty, and staff. The display showcases resources from reference, government documents, special collections, print magazines/journals, and books that can be checked out. This display will provide an opportunity to learn about the resources that your library offers.

The second display, also located on the 3rd floor, highlights some of the foreign language literature books that the library has in its collection. The display showcases books in French, Spanish, German, and Russian. For example, the library offers The Count of Monte Cristo in French, but also offers an English translation of the work.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, highlights four 20th Century American artists whose books are located in Special Collections. The artists are Georgia O’Keeffe, Maurice Sendak, Norman Rockwell, and Andrew Wyeth. The display also provides a short biography on each of the artists.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor, celebrates Constitution Day (September 17th). The theme for this year’s display is Life. Liberty. Freedom. Prosperity. The display highlights how the Constitution has played a part in the United States embodying life, liberty, freedom, and prosperity.

The displays will be up through the end of September.

Three New Library Displays for April

The Ort Library is pleased to present three new displays for April.

To celebrate National Library Week, held April 14 – 20, 2013, the first display, titled "Highlighting the Variety of Resources in the Library" is available on the 3rd floor (main entrance).  The display highlights the many varieties of resources the library offers: books, DVDs, CDs, records, e-books, and much more.

Did you know that the phrases "Makes your hair stand on end", "So-so", and "In a pickle" were all coined by Shakespeare?  The second display, also located on the 3rd floor (located between the 4 stand-up PCs), was created by Emily Zumbrun.  This display showcases Shakespeare and highlights the many phrases that are now common in the English Language all thanks to Shakespeare.

The last display is located on the 5th floor and celebrates Maryland Archaeology Month.  This year's theme for Maryland Archaeology Month is "Points in Time: Formal Biface Typology in Maryland".  The display highlights some of the projectile points that have been recovered from different Maryland archaeological sites.

The displays will be up through the month of April.

If you have any questions about the displays, please contact Theresa Mastrodonato at ext. 4425 or
tmmastrodonato@frostburg.edu or MaryJo Price at ext. 4889 or mprice@frostburg.edu.

The beginning of a new semester is a great time to get to know the services the library offers.  In this post we highlight:

Maryland AskUsNow! – The 24/7 chat reference service

Imagine this:
You are working on an assignment but the library is closed.  You need to find additional resources (articles) and you are not sure where to look and need some help.  What can you do to get some help?

You can use Maryland AskUsNow!

It is your access to 24/7 reference assistance.  You can access it from the link on the library’s homepage.  Once you click on the link, you can ask your question and be chatting with a librarian in no time.

The librarians will be able to show you how to find the information you need and perhaps even work with you on what search terms will bring the best results.  No question is too tough!

E-books Now Available!

Frostburg State University students, faculty and staff now have access to a collection of 7,500 e-books - and growing!

The Library's current e-book collection is hosted on the eBooks on EBSCOhost database available in Research Port.  Many of these titles are also available by searching catalogUSMAI.  Simply click on the Find It button to access titles listed with a location of "E-books."  Off-campus users are required to sign-in using the barcode number located on the front of their FSU ID card and last name.

E-books may be viewed directly on the eBooks on EBSCOhost database or downloaded to a supported e-book reader.  Students, faculty and staff who wish to download an e-book must first download Adobe Digital Editions and create a Personal EBSCOhost Account. Checkout periods for downloaded e-books range from 2 hours to 7 days.

Links to brief EBSCOhost tutorials explaining how to use the eBooks on EBSCOhost database - as well as other resources - are available on the Ort Library website.

If you have any questions regarding e-books (or any other Library service for that matter!), please feel free to email or chat with a librarian, call us at 301-687-4424 or see us in person by stopping by the Ort Library Reference Desk.

Ort Library joins Maryland AskUsNow!

The Lewis J. Ort Library is thrilled to announce that we have joined with Maryland AskUsNow! to offer students, faculty and staff a 24/7 chat reference service. This chat service allows the library to offer access to reference help whenever and wherever you may need it.

If you are working on a paper late into the night and you need some extra assistance finding information, you can now use Maryland AskUsNow! to chat with a librarian for that help. Librarians from the Ort Library chat only during certain hours, so you may be helped by a non-FSU librarian. Even though you may be chatting with someone from outside FSU, they still have access to information about the library and can help you use the library catalog or the library databases. Providing a valid e-mail address will also allow a librarian from the Ort Library to follow up on your question.

Try the service out by clicking on the Maryland AskUsNow! link on the library’s home page or by clicking on the icon above.
