Library staff anticipate rotating the display annually to highlight faculty, staff, and/or student scholarship.  Although the current display relies heavily on FSU Professional Achievements booklets for its content, your submissions and suggestions are welcome. Explore these tools to help you manage your research sources!

Keeping track of your articles and other sources for research can become overwhelming at times.  Take a moment to consider some of the tools that are available to help you save information about your sources. Many of these tools will also be helpful when writing your paper through the use of Word plugins and assistance with citation formats*.

MyEBSCOhost

Through the library's OneSearch discovery service, you already have access to MyEBSCOhost.  By setting up an account, you can quickly save items in your search results for future reference. Your MyEBSCOhost folder can be organized into subfolders for different research projects and personal interest topics.  You may also set up search alerts and journal alerts to notify you when new items are found in one of your saved searches or when a new issue of your favorite journal or magazine is available! Learn more in the video at this link.

Mendeley

Mendeley is a freely available reference manager. You can quickly save your resources by setting up a Mendeley plugin for your browser.  You can also save or upload PDF copies of articles to your Mendeley account. Apps for IOS and Android are also available. You may also add a plug-in for Microsoft Word to automatically insert your in-text citations and update your reference list as you compost your paper!

Zotero

Another free reference manager is Zotero, which has many of the same features as Mendeley. It is made by Mozilla, and works exclusively with the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Zotero Quick Start Guide: https://www.zotero.org/support/quick_start_guide

And more!

The managers listed above are free, but there are also subscription-based tools that you may also be interested in exploring, such as:

It is worth all of these to determine which tools fit best with your needs and your working style. It may take some time to get used to using these tools, but once you become accustomed to them, you may find that your research and writing process have become much less frustrating!

Good luck, and happy researching!

* A word of caution about using any of these tools to help with citing. While the formatting assistance is a great help, none of these tools are perfect in creating correct citations. It is important to review the citations yourself and adjust them where needed. The library has citation style manuals available, and of course there are several online resources that are helpful with this!

New Library Displays for March

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present two new displays for March.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor of the library, celebrates Irish-American Heritage Month and highlights the culture of Irish-Americans. The second display, located on the 5th floor of the library, highlights the Great Hunger of Ireland. Due to the Great Hunger there was a large influx of Irish immigrants into the United States. This display highlights the causes and history of the Great Hunger as well as some resources the library offers on this topic.

The second display, located on the 4th floor of the library, highlights the start of the "Spanish Flu' Epidemic across the globe. The "Spanish Flu" is a misnomer as Spain was the first country to openly report about the epidemic. Other countries did not report about the epidemic due to the news blackout during World War I. The "Spanish Flu" infected over 1/3 of the population of the world, and killed between 20 and 50 million people. The display highlights information about the epidemic as well as resources the library offers on this topic.

March Book Madness 2018 Has Started!!!!

This is the 5th year of the Lewis J. Ort Library's March Book Madness.

Just like the  NCAA Basketball Tournament that will be held during March, the Ort Library will hold its own tournament, only our tournament will crown one book the Champion of March Book Madness. Eight different categories of books were selected and through a tough and rigorous process, the library staff narrowed down the list of books to eight books in each category, for a total of 64 books.

Voting for the Round of 64 begins on Thursday March 1 and ends on Sunday March 4.

The categories are:
  • 21st Century Classics
  • Books on TV
  • Epics
  • Horror
  • Autobiographies
  • Desert Island Stories
  • Gangsters, Gumshoes, and Femme Fatales
  • Mythology

Just like in the NCAA Tournament, we will start out with 64 teams (books). Student, faculty, and staff votes will determine which books move onto the Round of 32. Once the 32 books are selected, additional rounds of voting will take place to get to the Championship title game. The Champion Book will be crowned on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
There is only way way to vote this year via the Library Guide that has been created for March Book Madness.

The guide can be accessed via the following link: http://libguides.frostburg.edu/march-madness18

Some of the books for March Book Madness will also be available for you to check out on the main floor of the library (3rd floor). Just look for the display stand near the March Book Madness display case.
