Featured Online Resource--cylinders!

Featured Online Resource for the week of Feb. 28

Streaming and downloadable recordings of cylinders from the early 20th century: spirituals, waltzes, polkas, sermons, whistling, fiddle tunes, jazz and much more.

The University of California-Santa Barbara has digitized approximately 6,000 cylinders from the Donald C. Davidson Library's Department of Special Collections. These include many "Edison rarities" and are a treasure trove for those with an interest in the history of American music.

This gem of a tool allows you to create stories--or to present melanges of information in multimedia formats--from information from various social networking platforms. Blend tweets from everyday people with those from media outlets; embed youtube video; let the major networks chime in--however you want to create web's best-of on a particular event or issue.
Here's an example--Hosni Mubarak's fall from power with tweets from the scene and more--from PBS's News Hour.

A high percentage of users right now seem to be media outlets, but it's available to anyone.
