Featured Online Resource - Archives of American Art



This week’s Featured Online Resource is the Archives of American Art (http://www.aaa.si.edu/). It was originally founded by the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1954. In 1970 the Archives joined the Smithsonian Institution. The holdings of the Archive includes more than 20 million letters, diaries, and scrapbooks of artist and collectors; manuscripts of critics; business information of museums and other entities associated with the art world; photographs; sketches; and audio/video material. Additionally, the Archives is home to the world’s largest collection of oral history on the subject of art.

The Archives offers more than 125 collections that are fully digitized and accessible online. You can browse the list of collections that are digitized or search the site for topics that you are interested in. Additionally, many of the oral histories are available in mp3 format so that you can listen to them online.  Finally, more than 8000 images are digitized and you can search the image gallery on a specific art topic.

Featured Online Resource: Getty Publications Virtual Library



This week’s Featured Online Resource is the Getty Publications Virtual Library (http://www.getty.edu/publications/virtuallibrary/index.html). This virtual library contains more than 250 titles that have been published by Getty Publications over its 40 years of existence.  The titles included in the virtual library cover art, photography, archaeology, architecture, and the humanities. The titles also include works about artists and art history and studies of the collections that the Getty holds.

The website notes that the titles are searchable by author, title, and keyword. The results include the full descriptions of the works, tables of contents, and the ability to read the book online, purchase a copy of the book, or find a print copy in a local library. Some of the titles you can download in PDF format for personal use only.

New Library Display Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month



The Ort Library is pleased to present a new display highlighting Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15). The display is located on the 3rd floor near room 318 and highlights the history of Hispanic-Americans in the United States. The display also highlights some of the resources the library offers on the subject of Hispanic-Americans.

This display will be available through October 15.

It's Constitution Day (Sept 17, 1787 - Sept 17, 2014)




Today marks the 227th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution (Sept. 17, 1787).

Every year on this date, we commemorate this occasion and honor the Founding Fathers who signed this important document by celebrating Constitution Day!

You may learn more about the Constitution by visiting the Constitution Day / Star Spangled Banner Anniversary display located on the 5th floor of the library.

That's right, it is also the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner!

Also, visit our library guide at http://libguides.frostburg.edu/constitution to locate additional library and online resources, including videos, about the Constitution and Constitution Day.  Find entertaining games and videos help you test your own knowledge and learn even more about the Constitution!  An additional tab with information about the Star Spangled Banner celebration has also been added.

Library Highlights: Group and Individual Study Rooms



As we move into the fall semester, the Ort Library would like to highlight the individual and group study rooms that are available for your use. 

The library has five (5) group study rooms for groups of 3 or more people. Each study room is equipped with a computer and large screen monitor. Three (3) group study rooms are available on the 5th floor and two (2) group study rooms are available on the 2nd floor. To access a group study room, please stop by the Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor of the library to check out a key. Your group can utilize the group study room for two (2) hours. At least three (3) members of your group must come to the Circulation Desk to check out the key.

In addition, three (3) group study carrels are available on the 5th floor of the library. These are open computers/tables for use and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  

Additionally, four (4) individual study rooms are available for student use on the 5th floor of the library. These rooms are always unlocked and you do not need a key to access them.  The individual study rooms can be found at the end of the floor closest to the Chesapeake Dining Hall. If you take the elevator to the 5th floor, turn left and you will find them at the end of the stacks. The rooms that are available for use are 514(A), 515, 519(G), and 522(C).

Library Highlights: Maryland AskUsNow!



Welcome back students, faculty, and staff.   The beginning of a new semester is a great time to get to know the services the library offers.  In this post we highlight:

Imagine this:
You are working on an assignment but the library is closed.  You need to find additional resources (articles) and you are not sure where to look and need some help.  What can you do to get some help?

You can use Maryland AskUsNow!  It is your access to 24/7 reference assistance.  

You can access it from the link on the library’s homepage.  Once you click on the link, you can ask your question and be chatting with a librarian in no time.

You can also access it through the AskUsNow qwidget located on the results screen in OneSearch. You do not even have leave the results screen to chat with a librarian.



The librarians will be able to show you how to find the information you need and perhaps even work with you on what search terms will bring the best results.  No question is too tough!
