Featured Online Resource: The American Film Institute

The American Film Institute (AFI) is dedicated to motion picture preservation and education.

Their blog provides interviews with performers, directors, and others in the motion picture industry.  You can listen to podcasts from their podcast library to hear professionals discuss historic and more recent movies.

The AFI also runs the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, MD.  A list of events is available to see their schedule of films.

They might be best known, however, for their movie lists.  One of their most well known lists is AFI's 100 Greatest American Films of All Time. This list was published in 2007, on their 100th anniversary.  While the top 100 of all time may be their most famous list, there are many more to see.  The 10 Top 10 lists America's 10 Greatest Films in 10 Classic Genres.

Take a few moments to guess the number one picks in each of these lists, and then click the link to see if you were correct!

What-I'm-Reading-Wednesday: The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton

At 834 pages, Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries may seem more like a cinder block than a novel, but inside this huge book is a lush and sweeping historical saga full of mystery and brilliant writing. Set in the 1866 gold rush in New Zealand, Catton tells a series of intricate stories interwoven through a cast of interesting and unusual characters all centered around several mysterious occurrences that take place on the same night. When the young Englishman, Walter Moody, arrives in town after a harrowing sea voyage, he finds himself in the midst of strange company at the local hotel. Twelve men have converged in the hotel's smoking room to discuss their involvement, or sworn lack thereof, in the death of the town hermit, the disappearance of a young man recently rich from the gold mines, and the near suicide of the town's most desirable prostitute, all of which occurred two weeks prior. As Moody is slowly welcomed into the group of men, he begins to attempt to unravel the complex mysteries of not just the events being discussed but of the men themselves.

Catton's work is reminiscient of Dickens in its plot twists and intricacies. As the youngest ever winner of the Man Booker Prize, she is certainly someone to watch as well as read.

2nd Annual March Book Madness Begins Today March 6th

Last year's March Book Madness was such a success; the Ort Library has decided to hold the March Book Madness Tournament again. Just like the  NCAA Basketball Tournament that will be held during March, the Ort Library will hold its own tournament, only our tournament will crown one book the Champion of March Book Madness. Eight different categories of books were selected and through a tough and rigorous process, the library staff narrowed down the list of books to eight books in each category, for a total of 64 books.

The categories selected are:

  • Children’s Books
  • Young Adult
  • Books on Screen
  • Graphic Novels
  • American Lit
  • Brit Lit
  • Historical Fiction
  • Banned Books

Just like in the NCAA Tournament, we will start out with 64 teams (books). Student, faculty, and staff votes will determine which books move onto the Round of 32. Once the 32 books are selected, additional rounds of voting will take place to get to the Championship title game. The Champion Book will be crowned on Monday April 6, 2015.

Some of the books selected for March Book Madness will be available for your review on the main floor of the library (3rd floor). Just look for the March Book Madness display case.

There are three ways to vote:

  1. Paper ballots will be available in the library by the March Book Madness display case.
  2. A Library Guide has been created so that you can see the brackets and vote online. The guide can be accessed via the following link: http://libguides.frostburg.edu/march-madness-2015
  3. On the Library Guide, there is a PDF bracket that you can fill in and e-mail to tmmastrodonato@frostburg.edu

Voting for the Round of 64 begins on Friday March 6 and ends on Monday March 9. Voting for the titles in the Round of 32 will begin on March 10 and end on March 13. Voting for the Sweet 16, the Elite 8, the Final Four, and the Championship will take place after Spring Break.
