Ort Library Hours for Thanksgiving Holiday

The Ort Library wishes all students, faculty, and staff a safe and happy Thanksgiving. The library will be closed for the holiday from November 27 (Wednesday) through November 30 (Saturday). The library will reopen December 1 (Sunday) at 1:00 pm.

If you are working on projects during the Thanksgiving holiday, you can still access electronic resources (articles and e-books) using OneSearch (available on the library's home page).

The hours for the Ort Library during the Thanksgiving Holiday are:

• Monday, November 25: 7:30 am - midnight
• Tuesday, November 26: 7:30 am - 5:00 pm
• Wednesday to Saturday, November 27 to 30: Closed
• Sunday December 1: 1:00 pm - midnight

Library Highlights: Multimedia Presentation Room

Need to practice an upcoming group presentation? 

The Ort Library offers the Multimedia Presentation Room on the 2^nd Floor of the library to assist you with practicing for your presentation. The Multimedia Presentation Room allows students to practice a presentation utilizing the same equipment you would see in the classrooms on campus. 

The Multimedia Presentation Room is also available for students to watch DVDs or VHS tapes that the library has available. The room is equipped with a large LCD monitor for watching DVDs or VHS tapes.

If you have any questions about using the Multimedia Presentation Room, please see a librarian at the Reference Desk or stop by the Media Desk. Both desks are located on the 2nd floor of the library.

          

Featured Online Resource - Pew Research Center

Have you ever noticed that when watching, listening to, or reading the news about a popular topic, you often hear references to the Pew Research Center? The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan organization that performs public opinion research on a variety of current issues.

While the news stories can provide basic information about their findings, you will find an even deeper level of information if you visit their website directly!

The website is organized into 7 major topics (US Politics, Media & News, Social Trends, Religion, Internet & Tech, Hispanics, and Global), and each of those can be narrowed down to more specific topics.

When reviewing one of their research reports, be sure to check the page for links to supporting information such as a PDF version of the "Complete Report".  The complete reports can go into much more detail about the research and findings.

The major topic pages also provide access to information such as data sets, interactive pages, and infographics.

In addition to their own research, the Center also occasionally reports on other related (and often fun and interesting) research.  Are you curious about which presidents were considered the most and least narcissistic?  Take a look at this report!

Consider reviewing this site if any of those major topics fits your own research interests.  Are you not sure about a topic to research for your paper?  In that case, consider browsing the site for some ideas on trending topic!

Library Highlights: Finding DVDs and VHS Tapes in the Library

The Ort Library offers DVDs and VHS tapes for student use. The library offers educational and some popular DVDs/VHS tapes for use by students, faculty, and staff. DVDs/VHS tapes are available to be checked out for seven (7) days. When you find the DVD/VHS tape that you would like to check out, stop by the Media Desk (located on the 2^nd floor of the library). We will get the DVD/VHS tape for you and then you can take it to the Circulation Desk (located on the 3^rd floor of the library) to check the item out.

The library also provides a presentation room (for one or more people) and several individual rooms to watch the DVDs/VHS tapes.

Examples of some new DVDs that have arrived:

• The March: The Story of the Greatest March in American History
• Decoding Neanderthals
• Fracking: Weighing the Risks

There are several different ways to access the DVDs/VHS tapes that the library offers:

If you want to see all the DVDs/VHS tapes the library has available, you can search the library catalog. To do this:

a.       Go to the library’s home page (http://www.frostburg.edu/lewis-ort-library/).

b.      In the center of the screen, click on the Tab that says Catalog.

c.       Click on the link that says FSU catalog.

d.      Once in the catalog, click on the Advanced Search link at the top of the page.

e.      Leave Word Search box blank (this will bring up all results).

f.        Under format select Videos – DVD (to search for DVDs) or Videos – VHS (to search for VHS tapes).

g.       Select Search.

h.      You will now have a list of DVDs or VHS tapes that the library has available.

If you have a specific subject that you want to see if we have a DVD/VHS tape for, you can search OneSearch.

a.       Go to the library’s home page (http://www.frostburg.edu/lewis-ort-library/).

b.      Under the tab that says Articles, Books, and More – type in a keyword of the topic you are looking for.

c.       The results page that comes up will include all types of media, including videos.

d.      To narrow down to just videos, on the left hand side under the heading of Publication Type, click Show More.

e.      Put a check next to Videos and click Update.

f.        Now you only have results of videos available.

g.       To get just the videos that are available at FSU, on the left hand side under the heading Locations, click Show More.

h.      Put a check next to FSU and click Update.

i.         You now only have results of videos available here at FSU.

Featured Online Resource - Google Art Project

The Google Art Project is a part of the Google Cultural Institute. The project provides digital access to over 40,000 art works from 40 countries.

If you browse the great variety of collections available, you will discover features such as:

• Learn more about the work by clicking the Details option.  
• Zoom in to see greater detail.  Some paintings are even digitized in "gigapixel format", allowing extremely close viewing for great detail.
• Tour selected museums which offer a "Museum View".  This option uses the same type of software as you may have experienced with Google Street View.
• Compare works side-by-side.
• Begin your own collection of favorite works.  If you have a Google account, they will automatically saved under this account.

Be sure to take the time to explore this site whether you're doing specific research or just want to take a break and browse a an art museum someday!

Three New Library Displays for November

The Ort Library is pleased to present three new displays for November.

The first display, located on the 3^rd floor (by the main entrance) is a remembrance of the day, 50 years ago (November 22, 1963) that President John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas. The display presents a timeline of events as they happened that fateful day in Dallas. Additionally, several books about the subject that are available here at FSU are shown in the display. Finally, the display also provides examples of some of the front pages of newspapers from around the country that have been collected on microfilm about the event. The library owns a copy of the microfilm entitled Memorial Collection of Newspapers on Microfilm: Chronicling Events of the Assassination of John F. Kennedy, November 22-26, 1963 (E842 .M45). If you would like to see this newspaper collection, please stop by the 2^nd floor of the library.

The second display, also located on the 3^rd floor (located between the 4 stand-up PCs) looks at food insecurity and hunger for those living in Allegany and Garrett counties. More than 49 million Americans are living in households that are food insecure. According to the latest US Census data, more than 30% of households in Allegany County and almost 28% of households in Garrett County have incomes of less than $25,000, which can make purchasing food difficult. The Ort Library will be collecting for the Frostburg Food Pantry through the end of the semester. A collection box is located by the display.

The final display, located on the 5^th floor of the library, recognizes the 150^th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address given on November 19, 1863. His speech was one of many given that day to remember those that were killed during the Battle of Gettysburg that occurred the first three days of July 1863. Lincoln was there to dedicate a national cemetery to those killed in the battle. His speech begins with the famous line “Four score and seven years ago…”
The displays will be up through the end of November.
