Banned Books Week: September 27 - October 3, 2020

Banned Books Week began in 1982 when libraries notices that many books were being challenged and/or removed from libraries, schools, and bookstore. Since 1982, libraries and other organizations have taken an active role in making sure the public is aware of the books that are being challenged and to make sure that everyone has the " FREEDOM TO READ".

This year's theme for Banned Books Week is: 

Censorship of a Dead End. Find your Freedom to Read! 

The library has a display on Banned Books Week with some information about the most challenged books of 2019 and some of the books that have been challenged. The library also has a small display of books (that can be checked out) of books that have been challenged throughout the years.

Librarians are available to help students and faculty with any question related to the research process including developing keywords and search strategies, navigating library databases and resources, and correctly citing sources. 

 

It's Constitution Day! Sept 17, 1783 - Sept 17, 2020

Join us in recognizing the 237th anniversary of the United States Constitution!  

We are providing some information on resources and events that you can check out to help you develop a deeper understanding of the Constitution and various issues related to the Constitution.

Visit the library to pick up a free Pocket Constitution at the display case near the Library Instruction Center (to the left after you enter the library). This year, the display features information about the amendment process and ideas that have been discussed as potential amendments for the future.

Visit our Constitution Day information guide for videos and links to resources about the US Constitution. This year, additional pages/tabs have been added to the guide recognizing the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, and general information about the Amendment process.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15)

The Lewis J. Ort Library staff welcomes you to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) with a new display on the 5th floor of the library. 

 

The display celebrates this year's theme: Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past and Embrace the Future.

 

The display highlights some of the resources the library has about the history and culture of Hispanics in the United States.

The Hispanic Network Magazine provides context for the difference between the terms Hispanic and Latino:

    "Hispanic and Latino are often used interchangeably though they actually mean two different things. Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish and/or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations, while Latino refers to people who are from or descended from people from Latin America." TD &T (formerly Theatre Design and Technology) Journal Available Online

The Lewis J. Ort Library staff are pleased to let everyone know that the journal TD & T (Theatre Design and Technology) is freely available online for student, faculty, and staff use.

The journal can be accessed through either of the following links:

You can then access the journal by selecting the FindIt button. If you are off-campus you will need to sign in with your barcode and last name.

The online journal is available from its first issue in 1965.

New Displays for August 2020

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays for August 2020.

The first display is located on the 3rd floor of the library. It is a welcome to students, faculty, and staff back to the library by introducing some of the resources and services that the library offers.

The second display is also located on the 3rd floor of the library. It celebrates the first US Census held in August 1790. The first census recorded just under 4 million people living in the US.

The third is located on the 5th floor of the library. It celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. the display highlights several women who were instrumental in the suffrage movement.

March Book Madness 2020 - Champion Crowned

The voting for the Champion of March Book Madness 2020 has ended.

In the end it came down to a contest between:

In the end only one book can be crowned Ort Library's March Book Madness Champion for 2020. With over 2800 votes.....
