Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15)

The Lewis J. Ort Library staff welcomes you to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) with a new display on the 5th floor of the library. 

 

The display celebrates this year's theme: Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past and Embrace the Future.

 

The display highlights some of the resources the library has about the history and culture of Hispanics in the United States.

The Hispanic Network Magazine provides context for the difference between the terms Hispanic and Latino:

    "Hispanic and Latino are often used interchangeably though they actually mean two different things. Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish and/or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations, while Latino refers to people who are from or descended from people from Latin America." New Displays for August 2020

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays for August 2020.

The first display is located on the 3rd floor of the library. It is a welcome to students, faculty, and staff back to the library by introducing some of the resources and services that the library offers.

The second display is also located on the 3rd floor of the library. It celebrates the first US Census held in August 1790. The first census recorded just under 4 million people living in the US.

The third is located on the 5th floor of the library. It celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. the display highlights several women who were instrumental in the suffrage movement.

New and Continuing Library Displays for December 2019

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays for December.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor, honors the 75th anniversary of the World War II Battle of the Bulge (December 1944 - January 1945). The display provides information about the conflict as well as resources the library offers on this topic.

The second display, located on the 5th floor, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of French artist Henri Matisse. The display provides highlights of his life, information about his life and work, and resources the library offers on Henri Matisse.

New Library Displays for November

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays for November.

The first display, located on the 2nd floor, celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989). The display provides information on the building of the wall and its eventual removal. The display also highlights some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor, celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Sesame Street. The first episode of Sesame Street was broadcast on PBS on November 10, 1969. The display highlights some of the characters of Sesame Street and some facts you may not know about Sesame Street.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, celebrates Ricky Arnold, FSU alum and astronaut. The display has some artifacts from Ricky Arnold's trip to space.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor, celebrates the 160th Anniversary of the publication of On the Origins of Species by Charles Darwin. The display highlights some of the history of Charles Darwin as he traveled to the Galapagos Islands and came up with his Theory of Evolution. The display also highlights some of the resources the library has on Darwin.

New Library Displays for October

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays for October.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor of the library, honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. The display highlights facts and myths about breast cancer as well as showcases some resources the library offers on the topic.

The second display, also located on the 3rd floor of the library, celebrates the Anniversary of Nigeria's Independence Day, which is celebrated on October 1st. This display is sponsored by FSU's Gamma Theta Upsilon Geographical Honor Society. It also includes some resources on Nigeria that are available in the library.

   

The third display, located on the 4th floor of the library, provides information on the some of the pamphlets found in the George A, Meyers Collection, located in the Archives. It consists of over 5,000 pamphlets, flyers and brochures representing the Communist Party, Socialist, and other leftist movements. A large number of the pamphlets are from the former Soviet Union and the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Several of the pamphlets date from the 1920s and 1930s and deal with the Spanish Civil War and other contemporary issues.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor of the library, celebrates Earth Sciences Week. The theme for this year's celebration is "Geoscience is for Everyone". The display highlights information about the four main branches of Earth Science as well as some resources the library offers on the topic of earth science.

The fifth display, located on the 2nd floor of the library, celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. The display highlights many of the resources the library offers on this topic.

New Library Displays for May 2019

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present five new displays for May 2019.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor of the library, celebrates National Teacher Week (May 5-11). This display has been developed to accompany the Thank a Gram campaign that is being held May 6-10 to thank a FSU teacher. There are postcards and a box to put them in at the Circulation Desk.

The second display, also located on the 3rd floor of the library, celebrates National Nurses Week (May 6-12). The display provides some information on what nurses do and some of the resources the library offers on nursing.

The third display, located on the 2nd floor of the library, is a remembrance of the 30th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square. The display provides some background and timeline of the event as well as some of the resources the library offers on the topic.

The fourth display, located on the 4th floor of the library, is a remembrance of the 130th Anniversary of the Johnstown, PA flood. The display provides information about the flood as well as some of the resources the library offers on the topic.

The fifth display, located on the 5th floor of the library, celebrates the 65th Anniversary of the Brown v Board of Education decision on school segregation. The display provides background information that led to the Supreme Court's decision and well as some of the resources the library offers on the topic.

The displays will be up through the end of May.

New Library Displays for April 2019

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays in the library for April 2019.

The first display, located on the 3rd (main) floor of the library, celebrates National Library Week (April 7 - 13). This year's theme is Library's = Strong Communities.

The second display, located on the 3rd (main) floor of the library, celebrates National Day of Civility, April 11.

The third display, located on the 2nd floor of the library, honors the author's who will be here for the Children's Literature Centre's Spring Festival of Children's Literature. This event is being held April 26-27.

The fourth display, located on the 4th floor of the library, honors National Autism Month. The display highlights the resources the library offers on this topic.

The fifth display, located on the 5th floor of the library, celebrates Earth Day. Earth Day is held every April 22. The display highlights some of the species that are endangered and why they are important to the global community. The display also highlights some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

Library Displays - February 2019

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 3 new displays for February.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor (main floor) celebrates African-American History Month. The theme for this year is Black Migration. This display highlights the migration of African-Americans from the South to the North during the early 20th century. It also provides examples of some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

The second display, located on the 4th floor, celebrates The Harlem Renaissance. This display highlights the history of the movement and provides examples of some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

The third display, located on the 5th floor, celebrates the 125th anniversary of the birth of Norman Rockwell. The display highlights some of his most well-known drawings/paintings and provides examples of some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

The displays will be up through the end of February.

New Library Displays for December 2018

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays for December 2018.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor, is a celebration of the publication of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens in December 1843. This book has been adapted into many movies, plays, and musicals.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor, celebrates the first crossword puzzle published on December 21, 1913. There are examples of different crossword puzzle books in the display as well as three puzzles that you can take to work on yourself.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, honors the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898. The war started in April 1898. The United States gained the territories of Puerto Rico and Guam, purchased the Philippines, and Cuba became a protectorate. The display also provides examples of resources on the topic.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor, celebrates the first airplane flight by the Wright Brothers on December 17, 1903. The display also provides examples of resources the library has on the topic.

These displays will be up through the end of December.

New Library Displays for November

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays for November 2018.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor near the main entrance, celebrates American Education Week which runs from November 12-16. American Education Week celebrates US public education. This week was first celebrated in 1921. This display highlights the history of American Education Week and some resources the library has on public education.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor near the Library Instruction Center, honors Fibonacci Day, held November 23rd of each year. This display highlights that the sequence can be found in nature, information on Fibonacci, and some of the resources that the library offers on the topic.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, highlights the founding of the European Union in November 1993. Several countries had been working together in a "union" since shortly after the end of World War II. The display highlights the history of the European Union and some of the resources the library offers on the topic.

The fourth display, located on the 4th floor, commemorates Kristallnacht ("The Night of Broken Glass") that occurred on November 9-10, 1938 in Germany, Austria, and Sudetenland. It was organized by the Nazi Party and the Hitler Youth. During these 2 days, synagogues and businesses owned by Jewish members of the community were looted and destroyed. This display highlights the history of Kristallnacht and some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

New Library Display - 45th Anniversary of OPEC Oil Embargo

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present a new display, located on the 2nd floor of the library, highlighting the 45th anniversary of the OPEC oil embargo of several Western countries, including the United States, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The embargo lasted from October 1973 through March 1974. The embargo led to improved fuel economies of vehicles, the federal speed limit of 55 mph, and the development of the Department of Energy.

The display highlights the history of the OPEC oil embargo and resources the library has on this topic.

The display will be up through March 2019.

New Library Displays

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 3 new displays for September.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor, provides information on the resources the library offers for students, faculty, and staff. This display is a great introduction to the library for our new students. This display will be up until September 10.

The second display, located on the 4th floor, highlights the incorporation of Google in September 1998. The display highlights the history of the company as well as presents resources the library offers about Google. This display will be up through the end of September.

The third display, located on the 5th floor, highlights the 130th birthday of T.S. Eliot, considered the 20th century's greatest poet. The display highlights his early life and some of the resources the library has on his life. This display will be up through the end of September.

Library Displays for May 2018

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays for May.

The first display, located on the 2nd floor, celebrates the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, in 1818. Information about Shelley is included in the display as well as other books that relate to the topic of Gothic horror and science of the 19th century.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor, highlights spacecraft that have orbited and landed on the planet Venus. The atmospheric pressure and temperature on Venus is so high that most spacecraft last less than 1 hour on the planet. The display also highlights the resources the library has on the planet Venus.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, highlights birds of Maryland. There are over 400 bird species that makes Maryland their home and over 200 that have breeding grounds in the state. The display highlights just a few of the birds that make Maryland their home and includes some resources on birds found in the library's collection.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor, highlights the state parks of Maryland. There are over 50 state parks within Maryland. The state parks provide access to nature, wildlife, and history. The display also highlights some of the resources the library has on state parks in Maryland.

The display on Venus will be up through the end of May. The displays on Frankenstein, birds of Maryland, and the state parks of Maryland will be up through the end of August.

New Library Displays for March

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present two new displays for March.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor of the library, celebrates Irish-American Heritage Month and highlights the culture of Irish-Americans. The second display, located on the 5th floor of the library, highlights the Great Hunger of Ireland. Due to the Great Hunger there was a large influx of Irish immigrants into the United States. This display highlights the causes and history of the Great Hunger as well as some resources the library offers on this topic.

The second display, located on the 4th floor of the library, highlights the start of the "Spanish Flu' Epidemic across the globe. The "Spanish Flu" is a misnomer as Spain was the first country to openly report about the epidemic. Other countries did not report about the epidemic due to the news blackout during World War I. The "Spanish Flu" infected over 1/3 of the population of the world, and killed between 20 and 50 million people. The display highlights information about the epidemic as well as resources the library offers on this topic.

New Displays in the Library for February

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays in the library for February 2018.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor, celebrates African American History month by highlighting the contributions of "African American in Times of War". This display traces the heroism of African Americans who have served in all wars beginning with the Revolutionary War. The display also highlights many of the resources we have in the library's collection on African Americans in the US military.

The second display, located on the 4th floor, highlights the anniversary of the Donner Party. These settlers set out for California in 1846, but due to a series of unfortunate events, ended up spending the winter in the Sierra Nevada mountains. To survive their ordeal, some members of the expedition resorted to cannibalism to survive. Learn more about these settlers and the resources we have in the library on this topic.

The third display, located on the 5th floor, highlights the development of the phonograph by Thomas Edison in the 1870s. It traces the history from its beginnings to today.

Each of these displays will be up through the end of February.

New Library Displays for November

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to announce 3 new displays for November 2017.

The first display on the 4th floor of the library recognizes the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution that led to the development of the Soviet Union. The display contains resources available on this historical event that are available in the library.

The second display is located on the 3rd floor of the library and recognizes Native American History Month. The display highlights the 1973 Occupation of Wounded Knee by the American Indian Movement (AIM). The display highlights some of the newspaper articles from this time.

The third display is also on the 3rd floor of the library and is on King Tutankhamun. It provides information on his background and history of his tomb that was found in 1922.

These displays will be up through the end of November.

New Library Displays for October

The Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays in the library for the month of October.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor celebrates National Chemistry Week, October 22 - 28. This year's theme is Chemistry Rocks! The display highlights information on geochemistry and showcases several rocks collected by our library staff.

The second display, also located on the 3rd floor, celebrates the Independent Lit Festival that is held each year at FSU. The display highlights information about independent literature.

The third display is located on the 4th floor and highlights the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's publication of the 95 Theses. The display provides some information about why the 95 Theses were written and showcases some of the resources we have in the library on this topic.

The fifth floor has our last display on the resources that our government documents area has to offer. The library will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary as an Federal Depository Library in December. Thanks to Ron Clark for creating this display.

The displays will be up through the end of October.

Government Documents: National Park Service, Department of the Interior

Come see a new display of government documents regarding the National Park Service located on the second floor of the Library!

The National Park Service, a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior, is a system of over 400 areas encompassing 84 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. These areas include national parks, monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, seashores, recreation areas, scenic rivers and trails, and the White House. (NPS, 2017)

Did you know that Maryland alone has 28 areas designated by the NPS? Even in our own back yard lies the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, which begins in Cumberland, MD and terminates in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

Each year, the National Park Service publishes documents through the Government Printing Office regarding these areas including books, guides, pamphlets, maps, and more. As a member of the Federal Depository Library Program, the Ort Library receives copies of these materials and adds them to our collection of Government Documents, to be made available to the public. National Park Service materials published by the Department of the Interior may be found on the second floor, in the Government Documents section, under the SuDoc class I. Other circulating government documents may be found on floors four and five.
