Three New Library Displays for January

The Ort Library is pleased to present three new displays for January.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor (by the main entrance) is a display on the television show The Simpsons. The Simpsons started as a series of short sketches on The Tracy Ullman Show in 1987. It has won many Emmy Awards and was even considered one of the greatest television shows of the 20th century. For over 25 years, The Simpsons has been a reflection of what is happening in the US. Homer Simpsons’ phrase D’Oh!  has even made it into the Oxford English Dictionary.

The second display, also located on the 3rd floor (located between the 4 stand-up PCs) highlights the 10th anniversary of the two (2) Mars Rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) that landed on the planet Mars in January of 2004. The mission for each rover was to determine if water was previously found on the planet based on geology. Spirit Rover got stuck in loose soil and has not moved since 2009. As of November 2013, Opportunity is still in operation and has logged almost 24 miles on Mars.

The final display, located on the 5th floor of the library, highlights the career of Amelia Earhart, one of aviation’s pioneering women. She completed her first solo flight in 1921 and in 1932 became the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean. By 1937, she wanted to go after the next big aviation record, flying around the world. Unfortunately, just about 7000 miles from completing this record, her plane along with her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared. No trace of Earhart, Noonan, or the plane has ever been found.

The displays on the 3rd floor will be up through the end of January, while the Amelia Earhart display will be up through the end of February.

If you have any questions about the displays, please contact Theresa Mastrodonato at ext. 4425 or tmmastrodonato@frostburg.edu or MaryJo Price at ext. 4889 or mprice@frostburg.edu.
