Celebrate Banned Books Week 2017

The Lewis J. Ort Library Celebrates Banned Books Week 2017

Banned Books Week runs from September 24 through September 30. Banned Books Week began in 1982 when libraries began to notice that a large number of books were being challenged and/or removed from libraries, schools, and bookstores. Since 1982, libraries and other organizations have taken an active role in making sure the public is aware of the books that are being challenged and to make sure everyone has the “FREEDOM TO READ”.

This year’s theme for Banned Books Week is:

WORDS HAVE POWER

Stop by the Ort Library to see a display on Banned Books and check out some of the books that have been challenged (those that people have asked to have banned).

On Tuesday October 3rd at 7 pm there will be a Banned Books Reading in the Ort Library. The English Honors Society Sigma Tau Delta and the Ort Library at Frostburg State University are sponsoring an evening of readings from books deemed controversial enough to be challenged or banned. Please join us on October 3rd to read your favorite Banned Book.

Celebrate Constitution Day with a special guest on Monday September 18!

Please join us as we celebrate the 230th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution (Sept. 17, 1787).  This year, the anniversary falls on a Sunday, so we will be celebrating on Monday, September 18.

This year, the Office of Civic Engagement and Ort Library have partnered together to bring you a very special guest.  Ben Franklin will be available at the library on Monday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. We hope you have a chance to stop by to say hello to one of our favorite founding fathers. While you're here you can enjoy some refreshments, get a selfie with Mr. Franklin, and pick up a pocket Constitution!

Every year, we commemorate the signing of the Constitution and honor the men who signed this important document by celebrating Constitution Day!

Please join us in the celebration by visiting our online library guide as well as our display cases.

Also visit the two library displays located on the third floor of the library to learn more about the Constitution and some of the related materials that you can check out from the library.

The library guide is available at http://libguides.frostburg.edu/constitution.  This year, we are including a tab links to biographical information about Mr. Franklin and the other founding fathers along with additional information about the Constitutional Convention of 1787!

Please take some time today to learn a little more about the Constitution with these resources today.

Happy Constitution Day!

The Ort Library is hiring!

If you are an undergraduate student with a verified Federal Work-Study Award as part of your financial aid package, we invite you to apply!

We are looking for customer service-oriented, enthusiastic student assistants to help staff our Circulation and Media Desks! As front line staff, students should be prepared to greet and assist library users in a friendly and helpful manner.

Student assistants are responsible for:

  • checking materials in and out
  • showing library users where things are located
  • helping library users search the catalog

The Circulation and Media Desks have a variety of daytime and evening hours available, however students are limited to approximately six hours of work per week.

Once you complete an application, return it to the Circulation Desk and bring your financial aid work-study packet and a copy of your schedule (include classes, sports activities, and any organization events that may be a routine obligation). If supervisors are available at the time you apply, you may be interviewed immediately.
