New Library Displays for April 2019

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays in the library for April 2019.

The first display, located on the 3rd (main) floor of the library, celebrates National Library Week (April 7 - 13). This year's theme is Library's = Strong Communities.

The second display, located on the 3rd (main) floor of the library, celebrates National Day of Civility, April 11.

The third display, located on the 2nd floor of the library, honors the author's who will be here for the Children's Literature Centre's Spring Festival of Children's Literature. This event is being held April 26-27.

The fourth display, located on the 4th floor of the library, honors National Autism Month. The display highlights the resources the library offers on this topic.

The fifth display, located on the 5th floor of the library, celebrates Earth Day. Earth Day is held every April 22. The display highlights some of the species that are endangered and why they are important to the global community. The display also highlights some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

WPWVC ACRL Spring Conference

Amber Harrison, Pam Williams, Emily Zumbrun and Lisa Hartman attended the Spring Conference of WPWVC ACRL at Potomac State of WVU in Keyser on June 2, 2017.

Libraries Leading the Trends, began with a Keynote address by Cheryl Ann Middleton, Associate University Librarian for Learning and Engagement at Oregon State University Libraries & Press and in-coming president of ACRL.

Both Amber and Emily participated in the conference poster session. Amber, enrolled in the University of Kentucky’s School of Information Science, created a poster detailing the celebration of National Library Week at the Lewis J. Ort Library that contained the assessment of comments from students explaining what they love about the Library.

Emily Zumbrun, enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park’s College of Information Studies, designed a poster detailing her internship with the Dr. David M. Gillespie Special Collections and the Digital Projects Lab at the Lewis J. Ort Library to digitize seventy years of Commencement Bulletins for the Maryland Shared Open Access Repository (MD-SOAR).

Celebrate National Library Week (April 9 - 15)

Each year the National Library Association celebrates National Library Week. It is a way for everyone to recognize the work that library's do to support their communities and research. The Ort Library is a place for learning.  Whether it is taking library instruction classes, working on the computers, or studying in one of the many study rooms, the Ort Library has everything you need to help you study and learn.

This year's display for National Library Week highlights what the staff of the Ort Library believes we are expert in; what our staff believes we excel in.  

Now we want to hear from you.

"I Love My Library" Raffle Winners

During National Library Week we asked you to tell us "Why you love your library". We had lots of responses including:

As a thank you for telling us "Why you love your library", we raffled off two gift bags. The winners of the gift bags were drawn on Thursday, April 14, 2016.

The winners are Avian Hicks and Heath Vasquez. Heath Vasquez is a Health & Physical Education major who expects to graduate in Spring 2017. Avian Hicks is a freshman Biology major.

Art Night in the Library: April 14: 6-8 pm

Art Night in the Library will be held from 6 - 8 pm on Thursday April 14.

Come to the library for Art Night where you can make your own bookmarks, draw cartoons, create blackout poetry, and enjoy adult coloring pages.

Bring your friends and enjoy an artful night out in the library.

Nancy Frost Celebrates 23 Years

Nancy Frost celebrated her 23^rd year of service at the Lewis J. Ort Library on April 12, 2016. 

Originally hired for the Government Documents area, she moved to the Acquisitions Department in 2001. Nancy is always looking for the best prices for library materials.

Nancy is also celebrating National Library Week with her colleagues.

New Library Displays for April

The largest display for the month of April is for the celebration of the 40^th Anniversary of the opening of the Ort Library in April 1976. The displays with pictures and artifacts from the library are located on the 3^rd and 4^th floors. The 3^rd floor has the model of the library created by the architects, while the 4^th floor has the blueprints displayed. The current library is the fourth location where the library has been housed since the beginning of the university. The first place the library was located was in Old Main. It then moved to Lowndes and then to Framptom. The current home of the library was completed in 1975, but the library did not open until April 1976.  Each of the displays also contain pictures of the library throughout the years.

Also located on the 3^rd floor is a display that celebrates the 50^th Anniversary of the National Organization of Women (NOW). The Women’s Studies Steering Committee has assembled a display honoring the 50^th anniversary of the National Organization of Women, with a particular focus on the history of the local Allegany County Chapter of NOW. Though the local chapter is no longer active, they were highly productive in the 1970’s and 1980’s in this area focusing on important issues like reproductive rights, the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, and sexual harassment in the workplace. Highlighted items include collections of banners, pins, stickers, t-shirts, pamphlets, meeting notes, photographs, and other memorabilia from the Naomi Dagen-Blume materials which were donated to the George A. Myers Collection located in the J. Glenn Beall Archives at the Lewis J. Ort Library. Additionally, since April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, the display also contains a variety of historical NOW materials focused on the issue of sexual violence and harassment.

The 5^th floor has two new displays this month. The first display celebrates Money Smart Week which is held from April 23-30, 2016 and was put together by Lisa Hartman.  The display includes examples of our eBooks and online resources that are available to help you with many aspects of personal finances.  Free brochures related to general money management, identity theft, and more will also be provided at the display. Please help yourself!  Also, be sure to watch for information about our upcoming workshop, Tips & Tools 4 Managing Your Money, which will be offered on Tuesday, April 26 and Wednesday, April 27.

The second display located on the 5^th floor, highlights the April 30, 1789 inauguration of George Washington as the first president of the United States. The display includes resources found in the library regarding George Washington.

Scavenger Hunt in Library Tuesday April 12

As part of the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Ort Library and to celebrate National Library Week, the Library will be holding a Scavenger Hunt on:

Tuesday April 12 from 9 am - 2 pm.

The scavenger hunt has students looking for hidden "Bobcat Paws" throughout the library following the clues provided. When you find a "Bobcat Paw", bring it and the clue provided to the Circulation Desk to redeem for a prize.

Three New Library Displays for April

The Ort Library is pleased to present three new displays for April.

To celebrate National Library Week, held April 14 – 20, 2013, the first display, titled "Highlighting the Variety of Resources in the Library" is available on the 3rd floor (main entrance).  The display highlights the many varieties of resources the library offers: books, DVDs, CDs, records, e-books, and much more. 

Did you know that the phrases "Makes your hair stand on end", "So-so", and "In a pickle" were all coined by Shakespeare?  The second display, also located on the 3rd floor (located between the 4 stand-up PCs), was created by Emily Zumbrun.  This display showcases Shakespeare and highlights the many phrases that are now common in the English Language all thanks to Shakespeare. 

The last display is located on the 5th floor and celebrates Maryland Archaeology Month.  This year's theme for Maryland Archaeology Month is "Points in Time: Formal Biface Typology in Maryland".  The display highlights some of the projectile points that have been recovered from different Maryland archaeological sites.

The displays will be up through the month of April.

2009 National Library Week, April 12 through 18

WORLDS CONNECT @ YOUR LIBRARY is the theme for the 2009 National Library Week, April 12 through 18. National Library Week is an annual celebration of the contributions of our nation's libraries and library staff. All types of libraries -- school, public, academic, and special -- participate.

Please come to the Ort Library to help us celebrate! Come see the display highlighting WORLDS CONNECT @ YOUR LIBRARY located on floor 4. The display highlights world cultures and the education partners of Frostburg State University throughout the world.

The display includes a short history of marbles and how they are used worldwide. You are invited to guess the number of marbles in the jar at the Circulation/Main Desk of the Ort Library on floor 3. The student who guesses the number closest to the number of marbles will receive a 4 gigabyte thumb drive. Any student who checks out a book during National Library Week will receive a small gift.
