New Library Displays for October

The Ort Library is pleased to present several new displays in the library for the month of October.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor celebrates National Chemistry Week, October 22 - 28. This year's theme is Chemistry Rocks! The display highlights information on geochemistry and showcases several rocks collected by our library staff.

The second display, also located on the 3rd floor, celebrates the Independent Lit Festival that is held each year at FSU. The display highlights information about independent literature.

The third display is located on the 4th floor and highlights the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's publication of the 95 Theses. The display provides some information about why the 95 Theses were written and showcases some of the resources we have in the library on this topic.

The fifth floor has our last display on the resources that our government documents area has to offer. The library will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary as an Federal Depository Library in December. Thanks to Ron Clark for creating this display.

The displays will be up through the end of October.

New Library Displays for October 2016

The library is pleased to provide several new displays in the library for October 2016.

5th floor - Display celebrating the 135th birthday of Pablo Picasso. The display discusses his different artistic periods and has examples of books we have on Picasso in the library.

4th floor - Display celebrating National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.This display highlights some tools for people to be aware of when online and has examples of some of the resources available in the library on cybersecurity.

3rd floor -

• Display highlighting the history of political cartoons. Political cartoons have been in America since before we were first a country. Ben Franklin is credited with penning the first political cartoon in America. This display also highlights Dr. Seuss, who during World War II was a prolific political cartoonist. You can see some of his cartoons on display as well as other examples of political cartoons.
• Display highlighting the Independent Lit Festival that is being held October 14 and 15. This festival is sponsored by FSU's Center for Literary Arts.
• FSU has great faculty and staff working for the university. Besides begin great educators, they are also researchers and authors. The display highlights some of the faculty and staff who have written books or produced other works that are available in Special Collections.

New Library Displays for October

The Ort Library is pleased to present new displays for October.

The first display, located on the 3^rd floor near the front door, highlights the 8^th annual Independent Lit Festival. In honor of festival held October 9 through 11, the library is highlighting some of the independent presses, authors, and publishers.

The second display, located on the 4^th floor near the stairs, entitled “Comics: From the Newspaper to the Bookshelves” highlights some of the comic books that Special Collections has available for use. The comics include The Peanuts and Dennis the Menace.

The third display, located on the 5^th floor, entitled “Scary Good Reads: Classic Horror Books”, highlights classic horror books and their writers including Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft. To complement the display on the 5^th floor, the 3^rd floor has a display of classic and current horror books that are available to be checked out. Are you ready to be scared?

Four New Library Displays for October

The Ort Library displays for the month of October center on health and safety.  Floor 3 highlights Fire Prevention Week, October 6 - 12, with safety tips and resources.  Learn how to be safe using candles and while cooking in the kitchen or using a grill outside.  Do you have an escape route in case of a fire?  You can use the plan to devise and write your plan of safety.  Resources on the histories of the Frostburg and Cumberland Fire Department are included.

Floor 5 celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Included in the display are facts and ways to stay healthy.  Learn about men and breast cancer.  Discover what foods may lessen your risk and how maintaining a healthy life style potentially lessens the chances of getting breast cancer. 

Did you know on October 30, 1938, there was a radio broadcast of an alien invasion?   Orson Welles broadcast of H. G. Wells' masterpiece, "War of the Worlds" was so believable there was a mass panic.   Welles and Wells made the event seem real.  Read the newspaper articles of the broadcast's aftermath.  Check out the Library's sound recording (33 & 1/3 record)  of the radio broadcast for your Halloween celebration.

At the Western Maryland Independent Literature Festival,  Oct. 11 and 12, you can meet authors and writing experts on a variety of topics.  If you are a writer, there may a panel that will help hone your writing style.  Also present will be regional publishers with many of their publications.  Stop to talk about how to get your writing published.  Poetry, short stories, novels,  and magazines will be available for purchase.
