Intersession 2019 Library Hours

The library will operate under the following schedule for the January 2019 Intersession:

Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The library will remain closed on weekends.

The library will close for the winter recess beginning Friday, December 21, 2018 and will reopen Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

New Library Displays for December 2018

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays for December 2018.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor, is a celebration of the publication of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens in December 1843. This book has been adapted into many movies, plays, and musicals.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor, celebrates the first crossword puzzle published on December 21, 1913. There are examples of different crossword puzzle books in the display as well as three puzzles that you can take to work on yourself.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, honors the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898. The war started in April 1898. The United States gained the territories of Puerto Rico and Guam, purchased the Philippines, and Cuba became a protectorate. The display also provides examples of resources on the topic.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor, celebrates the first airplane flight by the Wright Brothers on December 17, 1903. The display also provides examples of resources the library has on the topic.

These displays will be up through the end of December.

New Library Displays for November

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays for November 2018.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor near the main entrance, celebrates American Education Week which runs from November 12-16. American Education Week celebrates US public education. This week was first celebrated in 1921. This display highlights the history of American Education Week and some resources the library has on public education.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor near the Library Instruction Center, honors Fibonacci Day, held November 23rd of each year. This display highlights that the sequence can be found in nature, information on Fibonacci, and some of the resources that the library offers on the topic.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, highlights the founding of the European Union in November 1993. Several countries had been working together in a "union" since shortly after the end of World War II. The display highlights the history of the European Union and some of the resources the library offers on the topic.

The fourth display, located on the 4th floor, commemorates Kristallnacht ("The Night of Broken Glass") that occurred on November 9-10, 1938 in Germany, Austria, and Sudetenland. It was organized by the Nazi Party and the Hitler Youth. During these 2 days, synagogues and businesses owned by Jewish members of the community were looted and destroyed. This display highlights the history of Kristallnacht and some of the resources the library offers on this topic.

Multimedia Presentation Room available to Practice Presentations

Need to practice an upcoming group presentation? The Ort Library offers the Multimedia Presentation Room on the 2nd Floor of the library to assist you with practicing for your presentation.

The Multimedia Presentation Room allows students to practice a presentation utilizing the same equipment you would see in the classrooms on campus.

The Multimedia Presentation Room is also available for students to watch DVDs or VHS tapes that the library has available. The room is equipped with a large LCD monitor for watching DVDs or VHS tapes.

Public Notice: MD Dept. of Housing & Community Development Consolidated Plan Annual Performance & Evaluation Report (CAPER)

The State of Maryland has opened a 30 day public comment period on the draft 2017 Consolidated Plan Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER). This includes a series of public meetings.

In Western Maryland, the meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 26.

New Library Display - 45th Anniversary of OPEC Oil Embargo

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present a new display, located on the 2nd floor of the library, highlighting the 45th anniversary of the OPEC oil embargo of several Western countries, including the United States, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The embargo lasted from October 1973 through March 1974. The embargo led to improved fuel economies of vehicles, the federal speed limit of 55 mph, and the development of the Department of Energy.

The display highlights the history of the OPEC oil embargo and resources the library has on this topic.

The display will be up through March 2019.

New Library Displays for October

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays for October.

The first display, located on the 3rd floor of the library, near the Library Instruction Classroom, celebrates LGBT History Month. This display is sponsored by SPECTRUM and Women's Studies.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor of the library, near the main entrance, celebrates International Skeptics Day (October 13). The display highlights some of the resources the library offers by leading skeptics.

The third display, located on the 4th floor of the library, highlights the 160th birthday of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. The display highlights his contributions to both domestic and foreign policy, including his support for the creation of the Panama Canal. The display also highlights some of the resources the library has on Roosevelt.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor of the library, highlights Earth Sciences Week (October 14-20). This year's theme is: Earth as Inspiration. The display also highlights some of the different resources the library offers on the topic of earth science.

The displays will be up through the end of October.

Banned Books Reading October 2

On October 2 at 7 pm, the Lewis J. Ort Library and FSU's English Honor Society will sponsor a Banned Books Reading.

The theme of this year's Banned Books Week is: Banning Books Silences Stories

The event is free and open to the public and will be held on the 3rd floor of the library.

Happy Constitution Day! Visit library for voter registration, Constitution trivia, and free pocket Constitutions!

Join us in celebrating the 231st anniversary of the signing of the US Constitution  (Sept 17, 1787) We will be marking the anniversary by giving out free pocket Constitutions to anybody who visits our Constitution trivia table (Monday from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm).

Volunteers from the Office of Civic Engagement will also be available to help you register to vote. We have an election coming soon, this is your chance to make sure that you're ready for it!

Charging Stations and Whiteboards Available for Use

The Lewis J. Ort Library is happy to provide some new items this fall semester for student use.

The first is the availability of 4 charging stations in the library. These charging stations are available on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors. On the 2nd and 3rd floors, they are located on the wall closest to the women's restroom. On the 4th and 5th floor, they are located on the column in the center of the floor. These charging stations allow you to charge your phones.
Please make sure that you are watching your device at all times.

The second is the availability of several new whiteboards. These whiteboards are smaller than the previous whiteboards that were available for student use. These whiteboard are movable around the floors. They should also have erasable markers and erasers available for use. If they are missing markers/erasers, please see the Circulation or Reference desks for assistance.

New Library Displays

The first display, located on the 3rd floor, provides information on the resources the library offers for students, faculty, and staff. This display is a great introduction to the library for our new students. This display will be up until September 10.

The second display, located on the 4th floor, highlights the incorporation of Google in September 1998. The display highlights the history of the company as well as presents resources the library offers about Google. This display will be up through the end of September.

The third display, located on the 5th floor, highlights the 130th birthday of T.S. Eliot, considered the 20th century's greatest poet. The display highlights his early life and some of the resources the library has on his life. This display will be up through the end of September.

Census Workshops - Wednesday August 22


The Ort Library is pleased to announce that we are once again hosting workshops to help you learn about the Census Bureau’s data tools.  Nesreen Khashan, Data Dissemination Specialist from the US Census Bureau will present a morning workshop on household data and then an afternoon session on business and economic data.

The workshop registration is free and they will take place on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the Lewis J. Ort Library’s Library Instruction Center.

You are welcome to register for either one or both workshops.

MaryJo Price Retires June 1

The Lewis J. Ort Library would like to congratulate MaryJo Price on her retirement from Frostburg State University.

MaryJo joined the Library staff in January 1984 as a cataloger and became our Special Collections Librarian in the Fall of 1987.  

She has provided support to students, faculty, staff, and researchers who needed to find information related to the history western Maryland and Frostburg State University. 

We are very happy for MaryJo as she begins her new life, but we will miss her as a friend and colleague.

Library Displays for May 2018

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to present 4 new displays for May.

The first display, located on the 2nd floor, celebrates the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, in 1818. Information about Shelley is included in the display as well as other books that relate to the topic of Gothic horror and science of the 19th century.

The second display, located on the 3rd floor, highlights spacecraft that have orbited and landed on the planet Venus. The atmospheric pressure and temperature on Venus is so high that most spacecraft last less than 1 hour on the planet. The display also highlights the resources the library has on the planet Venus.

The third display, located on the 4th floor, highlights birds of Maryland. There are over 400 bird species that makes Maryland their home and over 200 that have breeding grounds in the state. The display highlights just a few of the birds that make Maryland their home and includes some resources on birds found in the library's collection.

The fourth display, located on the 5th floor, highlights the state parks of Maryland. There are over 50 state parks within Maryland. The state parks provide access to nature, wildlife, and history. The display also highlights some of the resources the library has on state parks in Maryland.

The display on Venus will be up through the end of May. The displays on Frankenstein, birds of Maryland, and the state parks of Maryland will be up through the end of August.
