March Book Madness - Sweet 16

Congratulations to all the books that made it to the Sweet 16 during Ort Library’s March Book Madness!!

Voting for the Sweet 16 runs from Sunday March 23rd to Tuesday March 25th.

 

Again there are three ways to vote:

• Paper ballots will be available in the library by the March Book Madness display case.
• A Library Guide has been created so that you can see the brackets and vote online. The guide can be accessed via the following link: http://libguides.frostburg.edu/book-madness
• On the Library Guide, there is a PDF bracket that you can fill in and e-mail to tmmastrodonato@frostburg.edu

Some of the books selected for March Book Madness will be available for your review on the main floor of the library (3^rd floor). Just look for the March Book Madness display case.

The Library will be open and operating on a shortened schedule during Spring Break.

Spring Break Hours:

Friday, March 14 – 7:30am – 5:00pm

Saturday, March 15 – CLOSED

Sunday, March 16 – CLOSED

Monday – Friday, March 17-21 – 8:00am – 5:00pm

Saturday, March 22 – CLOSED

The Library returns to regular hours on Sunday, March 23^rd.

Lewis J. Ort Library's March Book Madness Tournament

The Lewis J. Ort Library is pleased to announce the First March Book Madness Tournament.

In honor of the NCAA Basketball Tournament that will be held during March, the Lewis J. Ort Library decided to hold its own tournament. Our tournament will crown one book the Champion of March Book Madness. Eight different categories of books were selected and through a tough and rigorous process, the library staff narrowed down the list of books to eight books in eight categories, for a total of 64 books.

The categories are:

• Fantasy
• Science Fiction
• Horror
• Mystery
• Romance
• Non-Fiction
• Contemporary Literature
• Classics

      Just like in the NCAA Tournament, we will start out with 64 teams (books). Student, faculty, and staff votes will determine which books move onto the Round of 32. Once the 32 books are selected, additional rounds of voting will take place to get to the Championship title game. 

The Champion Book will be crowned on Friday April 4, 2014.

Featured Online Resource: The US Government Manual

An essential title in our collection of government resources is the US Government Manual.

The most recent print copy can be found in our Reference collection with the call number: JK421 .A3.  Older copies are available in the Government Documents collection under the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) Number: AE 2.108/2:.

However, this is also available online, and the most recent copy can be found at the Government Manual website (http://www.usgovernmentmanual.gov).

The Manual includes text of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.  You can use this resource to learn about the 3 branches of the federal government as well as the divisions within each branch.  There is even a section that explains how agencies have changed over time through name changes and moving within the government structure.

If you would like to look at past government manuals online, they can be found at the Government Printing Office's FDsys (Federal Digital System) website.  Currently, they have the manuals back to 1995-96.

Take advantage of this resource just for the general information, to learn more about a specific part of the federal government, or to supplement your class research!

Two New Library Displays for March

The Ort Library is pleased to present two new displays for March.

The first display, located on the 3^rd floor (by the main entrance) focuses on Irish American Heritage Month. This year the focus is on singers with Irish-American or Irish heritage. Some of the singers include Bruce Springsteen and Katy Perry. The display also highlights some books from the library’s collection on Irish music.

The second display located on the 5^th floor of the library highlights the 25^th Anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska on March 24, 1989. The spill released more than 11 million gallons of crude oil into Prince William Sound. The display shows how the spill spread for the first week through Prince William Sound. Additionally, the display highlights the heavy cost wildlife paid during the spill.

The two displays will be available through the end of March.
