Library Introduces Kanopy Streaming Video

The Ort Library has recently introduced a new online video streaming service, Kanopy.  Kanopy's collection includes thousands of award-winning educational documentaries, training films and theatrical releases from producers such as the Criterion Collection, PBS, Kino Lorber, New Day Films, The Great Courses, California Newsreel and hundreds more.

Kanopy may be accessed via the Library’s A-Z Databases web page.  In addition, citations and links to the films are included in the OneSearch search engine located on the Ort Library website.  FSU students, faculty and staff will be asked to enter their 14-digit barcode number and last name to access Kanopy films and other Library resources from off-campus.

Faculty & Staff:  Please note that Kanopy videos cannot be embedded in Blackboard at this time, but may be linked to from your courses.  Please follow these instructions to link to Kanopy videos from Blackboard courses:
  1. Find the video you are interested in having your class view.
  2. Below the video, click on the Share button.
  3. Click on Share link.
  4. A URL is provided for you to copy.  This link will be pasted in your Blackboard course by creating an item, assignment, etc.
  5. To ensure off-campus access to Kanopy films, make sure to add the Library's proxy prefix (http://proxy-fs.researchport.umd.edu/login?url=) in front of the URL.  For example, the film URL http://frostburg.kanopystreaming.com/video/color-wheel provided by Kanopy should be added your Blackboard course as http://proxy-fs.researchport.umd.edu/login?url=http://frostburg.kanopystreaming.com/video/color-wheel.  Off-campus users will be asked to enter their 14-digit barcode number and last name to authenticate into Kanopy to view the video.
  6. When creating the link in Blackboard as an item, assignment, etc., after pasting the link in the box, choose "Open in New Window" from the drop down.
If you have questions about accessing or using Kanopy, please contact the Ort Library Reference Desk at 301-687-4424, libref@frostburg.edu or via online chat.  If you need assistance linking to Kanopy videos from Blackboard, please contact the FSU Instructional Design & Delivery team.

BioOne Complete:  An aggregation of more than full text 180 scholarly journals focused in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.

IPA Source:  A collection of literal translations and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions. The goal of IPA Source is to promote the comprehension and accurate pronunciation of foreign language texts in art song and opera in order that the singer may imbue each syllable with the appropriate emotional content.  As a specialized database, full text content is not available through OneSearch or linked via the Find It service.

JSTOR Life Sciences Collection:  A full text collection of more than 160 journals in the field sciences and health sciences.  All of the library’s JSTOR collections are bundled together under the heading JSTOR in the Databases A-Z list and Research Port.

Ulrichsweb:  Detailed information on more than 300,000 periodicals (also called serials) of all types: academic and scholarly journals, e-journals, peer-reviewed titles, popular magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and more.  As a specialized database, full text content is not available through OneSearch or linked via the Find It service.

These e-resources are available from the library’s Databases A-Z list, Research Port, and integrated into the Library’s OneSearch system (the search box on the library’s website). Full text content is also linked through the library’s Find It service, effectively connecting it to relevant citations in all of the library’s databases as well as Google Scholar.

Please contact the Ort Library Reference Desk at 301-687-4424, libref@frostburg.edu, or chat with a librarian if you have any questions or wish to know more about these e-resources.

New Library Online Resources and Database Changes

The Ort Library is pleased to announce access to the following new online resources for students, faculty and staff:

·       Education Research Complete:  This database covers education topics from early childhood to higher education and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, testing, curriculum, and leadership.  It provides indexing and abstracts for more than 2,100 journals, as well as full text for more than 1,200 journals, and includes full text for nearly 500 books and monographs.  Education Research Complete replaces the Education Journals database that has been offered by the library.

·       ARTstor Digital Library:  ARTstor is a resource that provides over 1.5 million digital images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and sciences with an accessible suite of software tools for teaching and research.  Community-built collections comprise contributions from international museums, photographers, libraries, scholars, photo archives and artists and artists' estates.

Citations to the content for both Education Research Complete and ARTstor are incorporated into the Library’s OneSearch service.  More information about OneSearch, including user guides and a basic video tutorial, is available on the library’s website.

The databases may also be accessed directly via the library’s website or Research Port.

Subscriptions to the databases Education Journals and Social Science Abstracts will end in early July 2013 and these resources will be removed from OneSearch and Research Port.  As described above, Education Research Complete will replace Education Journals.  Citations from Social Science Abstracts are duplicated in other Library databases and within the OneSearch service.
