Ort Library Presents New Displays for February 2015

The first display, located on the 3^rd floor near the entrance, celebrates Black History Month with a remembrance of Brownsville – An African American community in Frostburg. Read about the residents of Brownsville as well as view aerial photographs and materials from many sources.

The second display, located on the 3^rd floor near room 318, highlights the discovery of Pluto in 1930. Although it was first designated as a planet when first discovered, since 2006, it has been designated a dwarf planet. The display highlights the history of the discovery of Pluto.

The third display, located on the 4^th floor, highlights the sinking of the USS Maine in the Havana harbor in February 1898. The sinking of the USS Maine was one of the many factors that led to the Spanish-American War in 1898. The display highlights some of the resources the library has to offer on the Spanish-American War.

The fourth display, located on the 5^th floor, highlights Reggae Music and Bob Marley. Reggae music originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s.  Learn more about Marley and the music he performed throughout the world.

Featured Online Resource: Computer Desktop Encyclopedia

This week’s Featured Online Resource is the Computer Desktop Encyclopedia (http://computerlanguage.com/). The Computer Desktop Encyclopedia was founded in 1978 when the founder of the company was unable to find a computer dictionary that would work in the computer classes he was teaching. The dictionary started out with 300 entries and now has over 30,000. 

The site offers the option of searching for a particular term, browsing by letter, or getting the Tech Term of the Day. This site also offers users the option of downloading the dictionary to their iPhone, Android, or Windows device.

Featured Online Resource: Behind the Veil Oral History Project

This week’s Featured Online Resource (FOR) is Duke University Library’s Behind the Veil Oral History Project (http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/behindtheveil/). This project is a collection of recorded oral history interviews that chronicles African-American life in the American South during the era segregation, dates from the 1890s to the 1950s. Interviews were conducting during the early 1990s.

More than 400 of the 1260 interviews have been digitized and can be listened to online. Additionally, many of the interviews include transcripts of the recordings which can be downloaded in PDF format. The majority of the interviews are from people who lived in North Carolina, but other Southern states are also represented.

You can access it from the link on the library’s homepage.  Once you click on the link, you can ask your question and be chatting with a librarian in no time.  

You can also access it through the AskUsNow qwidget located on the results screen in OneSearch. You do not even have leave the results screen to chat with a librarian.

The librarians will be able to show you how to find the information you need and perhaps even work with you on what search terms will bring the best results.  No question is too tough!

Featured Online Resource: The Astronomical Almanac

If you are an astronomy scholar or even a serious fan, you may wish to explore the Astronomical Almanac Online.  The Almanac is a joint publication of the United States and United Kindom through the United States Naval Observatory, Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office, and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office.

The glossary can be a helpful resource to those lest familiar with Astronomical terms. The almanac compiles data on phenomena such as eclipses.  It also has sections covering the sun, moon, planets,  and more.

The site also allows you to download iCalendar files of a diary of astronomical phenomena.  This can be downloaded and imported into calendars in iCalendar 2.0 format such as Outlook, Google, and iCal,

You might notice that some types of information are not available online.  This data can be found in the print version of the Astronomical Almanac.  Newer copies can be found in the Library's Reference section, at call number: QB 9 .U55.  Older copies are in the government documents section at D 213.8.  (Just ask for help if you need assistance finding them!)

The almanac assumes that viewers have some background in understanding of the data.  If you are less familiar, and would just like to learn a bit more about astronomy, you might want to monitor NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day web site.  With each photo, a professional astronomer provides a brief explanation of what you are seeing!
