New Donations for Special Collections

The FSU Special Collections has recently received several donations adding to its documentation of the history of Frostburg and the University.

Emeritus Mathematics Professor Dr. Karen Parks donated two photographic images of historic downtown Frostburg taken in 1906.

The Hotel Gladstone was built in 1896 by William R. Percy and his son-in-law Gladstone Hitchins. It was sold to William Gunter in 1903 and has retained the name Gunter Hotel ever since.

Downtown Frostburg, Main street, 1906

In addition, Brad Richards, Frostburg State University Alumni 1988, donated a collection of items depicting the history of Frostburg State Teacher's College primarily during the 1950s. Included are images of College staff, President Lillian Compton, aerial photography, and letters from President Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed to Frostburg Teacher's College President Lillian Compton when he was President of Columbia University, shortly before he took office as the 34th President of the United States.

Brad Richards and donations

Brad Richards' mother, Ardtha Dunn Richards, worked in the Registrar's Office from 1947-1958 when she retired as Senior Stenographer to raise a family. Ardtha worked in Old Main and Lowndes Hall under Registrars Elizabeth Hitchins and Fred Wescott. She is seen here c. 1953 with Ivan C. Big Changes for Ort Library

Announcing Big Changes for Ort Library!
The Ort Library welcomes all students, faculty, and staff back to FSU for another exciting semester. As has been the case all over campus, big changes have been happening in the library!
New Library Website: Over the summer the library staff worked together with the Office of Information Technology to design a new and improved library website to match the University website. Research tools and information on collections, policies, and library spaces should be better organized and easier to find. Take a look around the new site and let us know how it’s working for you. To provide feedback, use the form on the main library page: https://www.frostburg.edu/library.
New Service Desk Merger: Also over the summer, library staff merged the 2nd Floor Reference Desk with the 3rd Floor Circulation Desk to create the new Library Services Main Desk on the 3rd Floor. This newly combined service area is a one-stop shop for all your library needs including research and information help, as well as borrowing materials, checking out group study room keys, and using course reserves. A service desk is still located on the 2nd Floor for help using microfilm, accessing 2nd Floor collections, and assisting with printing and scanning.
Open on Saturdays: Starting September 7th, the library will once again offer Saturday hours! During the regular semester, the library will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with limited services.
The Ort Library staff hope that these changes will improve the library experience for all and make for a successful academic year.
