Library Introduces Kanopy Streaming Video

The Ort Library has recently introduced a new online video streaming service, Kanopy.  Kanopy's collection includes thousands of award-winning educational documentaries, training films and theatrical releases from producers such as the Criterion Collection, PBS, Kino Lorber, New Day Films, The Great Courses, California Newsreel and hundreds more.

Kanopy may be accessed via the Library’s A-Z Databases web page.  In addition, citations and links to the films are included in the OneSearch search engine located on the Ort Library website.  FSU students, faculty and staff will be asked to enter their 14-digit barcode number and last name to access Kanopy films and other Library resources from off-campus.

Faculty & Staff:  Please note that Kanopy videos cannot be embedded in Blackboard at this time, but may be linked to from your courses.  Please follow these instructions to link to Kanopy videos from Blackboard courses:
  1. Find the video you are interested in having your class view.
  2. Below the video, click on the Share button.
  3. Click on Share link.
  4. A URL is provided for you to copy.  This link will be pasted in your Blackboard course by creating an item, assignment, etc.
  5. To ensure off-campus access to Kanopy films, make sure to add the Library's proxy prefix (http://proxy-fs.researchport.umd.edu/login?url=) in front of the URL.  For example, the film URL http://frostburg.kanopystreaming.com/video/color-wheel provided by Kanopy should be added your Blackboard course as http://proxy-fs.researchport.umd.edu/login?url=http://frostburg.kanopystreaming.com/video/color-wheel.  Off-campus users will be asked to enter their 14-digit barcode number and last name to authenticate into Kanopy to view the video.
  6. When creating the link in Blackboard as an item, assignment, etc., after pasting the link in the box, choose "Open in New Window" from the drop down.
If you have questions about accessing or using Kanopy, please contact the Ort Library Reference Desk at 301-687-4424, libref@frostburg.edu or via online chat.  If you need assistance linking to Kanopy videos from Blackboard, please contact the FSU Instructional Design & Delivery team.

Kanopy Streaming Video Trial

The Ort Library is conducting a trial of Kanopy, an on-demand streaming video service of educational films, from September 12, 2016 through October 15, 2016.  Kanopy’s collection includes more than 26,000 films, including award-winning documentaries, training videos and theatrical releases.

You may access the Kanopy trial at http://goo.gl/9Br1sm.  Off-campus users must login by entering the 14 digit barcode number from their FSU ID card.

The Kanopy collection includes films from many leading producers, such as the Criterion Collection, PBS, Kino Lorber, New Day Films, The Great Courses, Media Education Foundation, and many others. Independent filmmakers are also included.

Films are licensed for educational use and can be easily shared.  Kanopy provides the ability to create clips, create teaching playlists, and embed films into Blackboard.

New online resources are regularly evaluated by the Library.  Your input is a very important factor, along with budgetary and licensing considerations, in helping the Library determine which resources are most useful to FSU students, faculty and staff.  Please feel free to provide your opinions, questions and comments about Kanopy by completing a brief voluntary, anonymous survey at located at https://goo.gl/forms/PYcAnVYSoSNUlckp2.  Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Additional information about Kanopy may be found at https://www.kanopystreaming.com/about-us.  If you have further questions or would like additional information about Kanopy or this trial, please contact the Ort Library Reference Desk at 301-687-4424 or libref@frostburg.edu.
