Featured Online Resource - Smarthistory

This week’s Featured Online Resource is the website Smarthistory (http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/). Smarthistory began in 2005 as a place for learners to get more information about art history and for experts in the field to share information through informal videos about different art pieces. Users can search by time period (prehistoric to present), by style (Surrealism, Pop Art, etc.), and by artist (Goya, da Vinci, etc.).

The site also has a great article for those who are just learning about art history (http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/for-the-beginner.html). The site also includes information on non-Western art including art from China, India, the Islamic World, and Africa.

Every week, the Ort Library brings you a new and outstanding resource from the Web or from one of the library's databases. To get an archive of all FOR entries, click here. Also, you can suggest a website that provides well-organized access to useful info.

Accessing Library Resources during Summer Sessions

Are you taking classes online at FSU this summer?

You can access library resources through OneSearch, which allows you to search the library catalog and most of the library’s databases all at once from off-campus.

When you are off-campus, you will need to have your 14-digit library barcode to access the resources in OneSearch.

The barcode begins with 2206. You can find your 14-digit library barcode on your FSU ID.  If you do not have access to your ID, you can get your barcode by logging into PAWS.

The steps to find your ID through PAWS:
  • Log into Paws
  • Select Self Service
  • Select Student Center
  • Under Other Area at bottom of screen select Library Acct Info
  • Library Barcode will be listed there

If you need assistance accessing these resources, you can contact a reference librarian by phone at 301-687-4424, via e-mail at libref@frostburg.edu, or you can contact Maryland AskUsNow 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and they will be there to help you.  You can click on the Maryland AskUsNow icon below or on the library’s home page.

Have a safe and productive summer!

Featured Online Resource - Digital Public Library of America

http://dp.la

This week’s Featured Online Resource is the Digital Public Library of America (http://dp.la). The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is an all-digital library that provides information about items available from many different libraries, archives, and museums around the US. It also provides the thumbnails for millions of photographs, manuscripts, books, sounds, and moving images. You can browse by timeline or by subject. Although the library only links to resources that are available, it will provide users with information that might be found in different libraries across the country.

The DPLA also offers online exhibits of materials that can be found in different libraries across the US. This month's new online exhibit is "The Golden Age of Radio in the US".

Every week, the Ort Library brings you a new and outstanding resource from the Web or from one of the library's databases. To get an archive of all FOR entries, click here. Also, you can suggest a website that provides well-organized access to useful info.
